11-16-05 One of my favorite Los Angeles sites when I was young was the Le Brea Tar Pits. TAR PITS YOU SAY!!!!!!! Yes, it is a great place for a family outing/picnic and for learning about some of the animals that have lived in the LA area. When I was little, there were only the pits and a few displays that showed the ongoing excavations of prehistoric bones. Now there is a wonderful set of displays, educational movies, an area to watch the work and gift shop. All located in a beautiful park, right in down town Los Angeles. Of course I took pictures on my trip there last weekend. |

What has made the tar pits interesting to
children and adults alike? This family in distress has depicted the interest of the pits since I was a little child and are still there today to tantalize one's imagination. Prehistoric animals wondered into the pits while trying to drink the thin layer of water that sits above the tar. Trapped there, they would yell for help until others, mostly predators, would follow them in and also get trapped in the tar. |

 The tar is not easily seen below the water and could be mistaken for a very deep pond. It also makes a great mirror out of the waters surface. |
