Reasons Data Recovery Might Be Needed
        • Accidental file deletion:  This is probably the most common happening that cannot be corrected by last nights backup. That project that you have worked on all day and half the night that is worth a ton of money or the report that the IRS wants immediately. It just got deleted!!!!!! We could help. In some cases from across the internet.  See the links Top and Bottom of the page for help with any of these dilemmas.
        • Computer viruses or worms: Good Grief! You either did not backup your data or you were using the same backup media over and over again and now both your computer and your backup is infected and useless. All is lost, not quite! Again we can help.
        • Damage due to a power failure, brownouts or surge:
Unfortunately I see this frequently. Especially in this area. One can use a UPS to help in case of power failures or brownouts; however, even with the best of protection, surges sometimes get through and data recovery may be necessary. If you are not running a UPS (available through my sales pages) then you are very susceptible to data loss due to power disruptions. Anything not backed up may need to be data recovered.
        • Software program failures:
Software (including the operating system) can fail for many reasons. A corrupted update downloaded, miswritten code in some operation, improper installation or configuration.... Whatever the reason, software can cause data on the drive to be improperly overwritten or to be corrupted when written rendering it impossible to open or read some files. This may not be correctable by a back up copy as one cannot always know when the corruption occurred. Important files for email lists and book keeping may be involved or a current project. Whatever it is, if you need it, data recovery may be necessary.
        • Partitioning or boot-up problems:
The PC has been turned on. The customary single beep that states the BIOS doesn't have any problems. Then it happens. Invalid boot record or a blue screen, or a bad partition error, or Windows starts to load and never continues on or crashes repeatedly while loading. If this is a hard drive with critical, irreplaceable data on it and no backups, then data recovery is the only option to try and get the data back.
        • Corrupt or missing critical file system structures:
Scandisk and Defrag can only do just so much and then it is all over for your data. Without file system structures you computer may not even boot.

I hope that by now you are seriously thinking of backing everything up! Might I suggest remote backup so that your data will survive fires, thefts, earthquakes, hurricanes.... Check it out on my Healthy Data  page.
        • Drives that have been fdisked or formatted:
Fdisk is not easy to run accidentally. A disgruntled employee or spouse can cause all sorts of havoc with it though. Once done all data is out of reach to the normal person. Not to the experts at Ontrack though.

        • Application crash: Badly written software, corrupt programs, adware, spyware.... can overwrite data  or write bad critical data at the least opportune times.

        • System shutdown: Summer/Winter ower failures, a car into a local utility pole, the cat steps on the UPS off switch..... If it happens in the middle of a critical data write to the hard drive, your data could be lost unless a professional take over almost immediately.
        •  Hard disk or media failure:
Hard drives are rated in hours of service and when their time is up, they quit. Frequently without notice. Without a backup, the only way to get that data back is with data recovery services.

        •  Loss of backup and system by natural disaster: I have written about this higher up in the article. Here I would like to add that even if you are backing up regularly, if the backups are kept local to or in your office, they are subject to loss. A fire proof safe may keep things from burning in a fire, but they may not keep things from melting and most backup sources are plastic based. This can leave your business without critical data. The drive might be recoverable by the experts at Ontrack, it might not be. Please, Please have a backup offsite and out of the area. If it is already too late, by all means let us help by clicking

If somewhere along the line you decided that backing up your data is not for you or you just kept on putting it off, then eventually this page will be of CRITICAL importance in your life.  If you want to limit your risks and go for the remote, automatic, backup, visit our Healthy Data page to learn more.
